As Laudato Si', the Pope's encyclical on the care of creation, was being released two years ago, Pope Francis tweeted, "Climate change represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day."

So it should come as no surprise that the Catholic response to President Trump's executive order changing the American approach to climate change was the theological equivalent of "Not so fast."

Cardinal Peter Turkson, a senior adviser to the Pope and one of the architects of "Laudato Si', urged President Trump to listen to "dissenting" voices when it comes to the environment.

According to an article in America magazine, a Jesuit publication (Pope Francis is a Jesuit), Cardinal Turkson said that the President's action represents "a challenge for us."

Another article in the same magazine said that the President's action "is a direct contradiction of Catholic social teaching on caring for the environment." -response-to-the-president/800/

Truth is truth.
