Who has books and walls gilded with glittering gold
Plush robes of velvet and fur lined throws
Yet to the touch his skin is deathly cold
And invisible rust on his treasure grows?

He steps from the bath sweet with scented flowers,
His linens are white and the thread never is bare,
But his dreams are a black void that greedily devours
And the must of the tomb clings to body and hair.

His food is flavored with rare costly spices,
His rooms are bright with the light his beeswax candles shed
But unseen shadows cluster thick around him and his vices,
And he is always full but never fed.

By day he wears a smile and clothes of white
And of gifts and admirers he never does lack,
But the unfortunate soul who meets him at night
Sees his smile is grimace and his robes are truly black.

His hands are sought as a pure healing spring
While the blood on his fingers is ignored and disregarded.
Kings and peasants alike flock to kiss his gold ring
And a blessing is promised but a curse is imparted.

His voice is heard by every living ear
And his arms reach to the very ends of the earth
But his dreadful grasp can only trap those that fear,
And his breath was only borrowed from the moment of his birth.

He is more respected than monarchs and stronger than armies
And he claims the power to save both the body and soul,
Yet a strong wind or a child could bring him to his knees
And he will die in flames for the glory he stole.

He is hailed as God on earth by all whom he does meet,
While Satan stands invisible at his side.
He will soon be ashes under his victims' feet
For from the wrath of God he cannot escape, nor hide.

Amen to that brother mouse Smile

"Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God." Isaiah 50:10.
